Undergraduate Orientation

Connect with our First Year Fellows!

The First Year Fellows are six full-time students at Brown University who lead Orientation programming.

Got a Question? Want to Connect? Need a Student Perspective? Talk to a Fellow!

Embarking on your journey at Brown comes with excitement, questions, and a curiosity about what lies ahead. Our First Year Fellows are experienced student leaders who are here to help guide you through this transition.

Join us for virtual office hours on Zoom, where you can meet with our First Year Fellows and gain insights into life at Brown. If you have questions about navigating campus, discovering Providence's vibrant community, the Brown student experience, or understanding the unique culture that defines our historic campus, our Fellows are here to provide answers and support. If you just want to talk and connect ahead of your arrival to Brown, that's great, too.

Feel free to drop in with no agenda or a long list of questions; the Fellows can't wait to meet you!

    Samiyra Afife

    First Year Fellow

Hello! My name is Samiyra Afife, a senior at Brown, majoring in Health and Human Biology on the pre-health track. I am originally from Somerville, Massachusetts! As a First Year Fellow, my goal is to ensure your transition into college is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. My favorite Orientation Event is the Ice Cream Social! As a senior, my closest friends are the ones I met at the Ice Cream Social - the first night after arriving at Brown! A few fun facts about me: I love music (and DJ'ing!), super sweet iced coffee, and exploring new spots around Providence! Whether it's navigating academic choices or finding the best study spots around campus, feel free to reach out to me with any questions or for a chat! I’m here to support you in every step of your new journey!

    Kristine Carrillo

    First Year Fellow

Hi! My name is Kristine Carrillo. I am from Santa Barbara, California. I concentrate in Education Studies and International and Public Affairs (IAPA). I love thrifting, cooking, and going to the beach. Ask me about the Bonner Fellowship, work-study opportunities, and thrifting near campus. My favorite orientation event is the silent disco!

    Kris Lee

    First Year Fellow

Heyo! My name is Kris (he/him), and I'm a rising junior from Appleton, Wisconsin (the REAL big apple) studying Biochem and STS on the pre-med track! My time at Brown has only been filled with unbelievable memories, and I’m so excited for you all to launch your college journey very soon! My favorite O-week event is the Late Night Organ Concert, and in my free time, I love to conduct coffee-brewing experiments and play my cello. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, especially if it is anything to do with Open Curriculum advising, balancing lifestyles, and the “objective” coffee ranking in Providence! Looking forward to meeting you all very soon!

    Ivy Zhuang

    First Year Fellow

Hi everyone! My name is Ivy (she/her), and I’m a senior from Beijing, China studying history and data fluency. Outside of academics, I'm a campus tour guide, VP for Class Coordinating Board (social branch of our student government), EIC for Critical Review which helps Brown students navigate the Open Curriculum, and an incoming Meiklejohn and Peer Career Advisor.

I love acting, cooking, bobaing, and sunsetting! My favorite O-week event is the Ice Cream Social and my favorite animals are capybara and quail (in that order).

Ask me about: fun facts about Brown, performing arts, class recs, academic advising, my favorite animals
