Undergraduate Orientation

Bruno Leaders

Bruno Leaders are the heart of Orientation, Weeks of Welcome, and early transition experiences for new students at Brown! They support the onboarding of first year undergraduate students at Brown University by highlighting Brown’s values, curriculum, and co-curricular experiences. As ambassadors of Brown University, Bruno Leaders serve as mentors, facilitators, and official representatives of the university who introduce and model community values, norms, and expectations. Bruno Leaders make Orientation joyful, community-oriented, and fun.

The Bruno Leader Experience is one of Brown's premier undergraduate leadership development programs. Each summer, Bruno Leaders engage in a weeklong leadership retreat with keynotes, team-building, educational sessions, life and career coaching, and a Bruno Leader Alum-in-Residence, all before the work of Orientation begins. Bruno Leaders also participate in Bruno GROW, Guided Reflection on Work, to make connections between their role as a Bruno Leader and their life, career, and service leadership goals beyond Brown. The Bruno Leader experience is framed by six life & career competencies:

  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Student leaders will effectively collaborate within diverse teams, demonstrating a commitment to shared goals and responsibilities.
  • Communication: Students will effectively communicate ideas, information, and feedback to diverse audiences across various mediums.
  • Well-being & Care: Student leaders will demonstrate behaviors associated with individual and community care, including self-management, appropriate boundary-setting, and empathy.
  • Inclusive Leadership: Student leaders will translate inclusion and equity concepts to everyday behaviors, building capacity to engage and understand across differences.
  • Critical & Creative Thinking: Student leaders will demonstrate the ability to think critically, applying innovative approaches to problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Self-Assessment, Reflection, and Growth: Student leaders will engage in ongoing self-assessment, identifying personal strengths, areas for growth, and strategies for life & career development.
